Two Dead, Baby Injured

"SAN ANTONIO, TX — A woman was killed and a 1-year-old boy was seriously injured today by a man who barricaded himself inside a Northeast Bexar County home and shot himself after a neighbor confronted him, authorities said.

"Bexar County sheriff's Lt. Martin Molina said the shooter was found dead from a gunshot wound after a SWAT team forced its way into the home in the 6900 block of Old Ham Drive, just east of Windcrest.

"The shooter is believed to be in his early 20s.

"Molina said a neighbor called 911 just after noon and reported seeing a man shoot the woman with a handgun in the frontyard of a single-story duplex. The caller told deputies he took his own weapon to confront the man, who ran into the home and barricaded himself inside, Molina said.

"When deputies arrived, they found the woman and the boy lying in the front yard.

"Witnesses told authorities the woman had been holding the boy when the man starting firing at her.

"Molina said authorities hadn't confirmed if the child was the woman's son.

"The woman, in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, shot multiple times in the upper body.

"The baby was taken to University Hospital and was in surgery with a head wound, Molina said. However, he said it wasn't immediately clear if the baby had been shot or was injured by falling to the ground.

"`We're hoping that the 1-year-old survives,` Molina said."
