"He Was Totally Blank"

"ORANGE PARK, FL — Two people are dead and another is in the hospital following a shooting in the Sweetbriar subdivision in the Argyle area.

"According to Lt. Craig Aldrich with the Clay County Sheriff's Office, Cynthia and David Hayes, a couple living in a home in the 400 block of Thornberry Drive, have been in the middle of a divorce.

"Mrs. Hayes had an order of protection against Mr. Hayes, but that order ran out last month. When Mrs. Hayes attempted to remove some items from the house Friday evening, investigators said she thought she would be alone.

"But detectives said Mr. Hayes was home when she arrived and the couple argued before Mrs. Hayes ran into a neighbor's house.

"That did not deter Mr. Hayes, whom deputies said followed his wife into the neighbor's house before shooting and killing her.

"`I begged him to put the gun down, that I have a kid, and he was totally blank. He had no expression, he said nothing,` said Renee Wallace, a neighbor who saw Hayes with the gun.

"Officers said David Hayes shot a second woman at some point prior to shooting his wife, and a witness found the woman in the couple's front yard. That woman is now in very critical condition at Orange Park Medical Center where she was taken for surgery. Deputies have not yet identified her or said how she knows the couple.

"`I don't want to get in to that, that's a little deep in to the investigation,` said Lt. Craig Alrich.

"After shooting his wife and the second woman, David Hayes went into his own home where investigators said he tried to shoot and kill himself. He was initially unsuccessful but CCSO spokesperson Mary Justino said he later died in the hospital."

  1. I am the neighbor whose house he ran into and shot and killed his wife. I will never forgive him for what he did to me and my family. He was a nice guy and we were neighbors for 13 years. How do you do that to your neighbor. My house will never be the same!

  2. If you never forgive him, you will always carry that misery inside of yourself.
