Missing Woman Feared 3rd Victim Of Murder/Suicide

"GILROY, CA — A U.S. military veteran murdered his 11-year-old sister before killing himself in Gilroy, police said Thursday.

"Abel Gutierrez, 27, was the gunman in a murder-suicide that happened at 9 p.m. Wednesday inside an apartment on the 9000 block of Kern Avenue, police Sgt. Chad Gallacinao said.

"Police are urgently asking for the public's help in finding a 52-year-old Gilroy woman who they believe is either critically injured or already dead.

"Martha Gutierrez is missing and likely needs immediate medical attention, Gallacinao said Thursday afternoon.

"Abel Gutierrez was a U.S. military veteran who had been suffering from post traumatic stress disorder since returning home from a war zone, family members said.

"Gilroy police said they had been called to the family's home several times in the past. The Gilroy Police Department had been working with the veteran's family and the Office of Veterans Affairs to get him help and treatment for PTSD.

"On Wednesday night, Abel Gutierrez shot his 11-year-old sister in the head before turning the gun on himself, Gallacinao said. The Gilroy Dispatch newspaper said the girl was a student at South Valley Middle School.

"`There was forensic evidence located at the scene to suggest that Martha Gutierrez is critically injured or deceased,` Gallacinao said. `Detectives have been unable to locate Martha Gutierrez and are requesting the public’s help to determine her whereabouts.`"
