Mom Charged With Attempted Double Murder/Suicide

"SALEM, MA — A Salem, Mass. mother has pleaded guilty to numerous charges after allegedly slicing the throats of her two children and setting their apartment on fire.

"Tanicia Goodwin, 25, has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and arson.

"`A firefighter crawled into a hallway which was off of the main living room and found the defendant's 8-year-old son,` said a prosecutor. `He had a deep laceration going across his neck from one side to the other... In the meantime, the defendant had walked to the Salem Police Department. She entered, she smashed a glass display case in the lobby. Police found her sitting on the floor. Her shirt and pants had red liquid stains on them, believed to be blood. Her pants smelled of lighter fluid and she appeared to have soot on her hands. The defendant repeated numerous times 'I did what I had to do to protect my children, I'm sorry.'`

"Goodwin was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for March 26.

"Her 8-year-old son underwent surgery at Children's Hopital Boston Sunday evening and is listed in critical condition. Her 3-year-old daughter is undergoing surgery Monday and is also in critical condition."
