Couple Had Been "Having Problems"

"VINTON, VA — A Vinton couple was found dead from gunshot wounds today in what police said appears to be murder and suicide.

"Vinton police said they believe the dead are Timothy Drew, 42, and his estranged wife, Kimberly Drew, 44. Autopsies will be conducted, police Detective J.M. Testerman said in a statement.

"The Drews had recently separated and had been `having problems` for about four months, according to Kimberly Drew's friend, Celia Gerig. Gerig said she phoned Kimberly Drew shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday night to ask if Drew wanted to spend the night at the friend's house, the warrant said.

"`Kimberly was afraid and didn't know what to do,` the warrant quotes Gerig as saying. The friend didn't hear back and drove to the home on Halliahurst Avenue today after failing to reach Drew by phone.

"Gerig told police she found a bedroom window screen cut and a box cutter lying on the ground. Through the window she could see the body of a man face-down on top of a woman's body, the warrant said.

"Police found the couple dead on a bed soon afterward in what officers on the scene reported `appeared to be a murder-suicide situation between a male and female,` according to the warrant.

"The couple's two children were staying with their father Wednesday night and told officers he was depressed about the separation, the warrant said. The children reported last seeing Timothy Drew about 11 p.m. on his couch."

  1. I live in Virginia. I know the courts here will only grant an order of protection for 2 weeks, with the judges sealing the records of one ever being issued.

Protecting women and children are not high on the police or judge's priority lists. Instead, all too often, their sympathies lay with the lawyers who drag these things out for profit and turn bad situations into worse ones for money. We in the domestic violence community want a new category of murder added to the Uniform Crime Reporting System, Murder by Law.
