"BURNSVILLE, NC — Deputies are investigating the deaths of a Yancey County man and woman who were both shot in the chest. The circumstances surrounding the deaths are unclear, and officials declined to specify whether they suspected a murder-suicide.
"Sheriff Gary Banks said investigators went to the home of Charles Harrison Bennett on 834 Green Mountain Drive just outside Burnsville around 2 p.m. Monday after receiving a report that a woman was lying in the front yard.
"Lila Marie Davis, 56, of Whispering Pines Mobile Home Park, was dead at the scene. Banks said evidence at the scene showed she died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
"The sheriff said Bennett, 75, and his 1997 Chevrolet truck were not at the residence. Concerned about his safety, deputies launched a search for the man and his vehicle, Banks said.
"The truck was found around 5 p.m. parked near a small fishing pond on Bennett's property in a wooded area several hundred yards behind the house. Bennett was discovered floating in the pond within a few feet of the truck.
"He also had been shot in the chest. Banks said a dive team recovered a handgun from the pond.
"Banks said Davis and Bennett had been dating for several months, but there had been no problems between the two reported to law enforcement. The sheriff said the investigation into the deaths is ongoing, and autopsy results and other evidence will be turned over to the District Attorney's Office. Banks declined further comment."
