Officers Find Bodies During Welfare Check

"ASHEVILLE, NC — Asheville Police say a man apparently shot and killed his wife before turning the weapon on himself on the east side of the city.

"APD says Diana Smith McGovern, 50, and William Michael McGovern, 51, were found dead at the home on 51 Mimosa Circle around 6:00 p.m. Thursday.

"Investigators say there were called to the address for a welfare check and no one answered the door. When officers checked the exterior of the house, they saw a body through a window.

"The woman was found dead on the kitchen floor from an apparent gunshot wound. Her husband was found deceased in the living room from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"Asheville Police say there was no history of domestic violence calls to the home."
