Shooter Hospitalized After 6 Hour Standoff

"ST CHARLES, LA — The man who called the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office to report that he had killed his girlfriend and left her body at the St. Charles Parish Hospital then held officers at bay for several hours before shooting himself, remains in critical condition at University Hospital, according to Sheriff's spokesman Capt. Pat Yoes.

"Gary Farrel, 52, of the 700 block of Luling Avenue called the Sheriff's Office at 2 p.m. on Thursday to report that he had killed his girlfriend and left her body in a car parked at the hospital. A short time later, deputies found the body of Ginger Mongrue on the floor of the back seat of a Lincoln Towncar with dark tinted windows. Yoes said she had been shot once in the head.

"The shooting apparently happened late Tuesday night. Farrel was captured on the hospital's surveilance cameras at 12:08 a.m. on Wednesday in the parking lot.

"After called the Sheriff's Office, Farrel barricaded himself inside a building behind his house. After about a six-hour standoff, deputies fired tear gas into the building. Authorities said Farrel then shot himself in the head.

"Authorities are not clear what led to Mongrue's death."
