Three Dead At Backyard Cookout

"PINSON, AL — Late Saturday, Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies were investigating what authorities said appeared to be a double murder/suicide in the 2800 block of Potts Hollow Road in Pinson.

"A statement from the sheriff said the incident appeared to be one of domestic violence, with a man and woman who appeared to have been fatally shot by a second man who then committed suicide. Deputies responded to the call just after 7 p.m., according to a statement.

"`How can you explain people that resolve their differences with that kind of violence?` said Lt. Randy Christian, spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff. `It is a deep-rooted problem, a misguided permanent solution to a temporary problem.`

"Christian said the Pinson deaths involved a woman who broke up with one man and started dating another. The former partner appeared at a cookout the woman and her new partner were having, Christian said. The former partner shot both of them, following the woman inside to fire additional bullets at her. He then killed himself in the backyard, Christian said."
