Slasher Survives Suicide Attempt

"PALMDALE, CA — Sheriff's detectives said today they have determined the stabbing death of a woman and the wounding of a man in Palmdale Thursday was a murder-attempted suicide.

"Homicide detectives have arrested Joel Juarez Meza, 28, for murder, Sgt. Diane Hecht of Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said. The case was to be presented to the District Attorney at the Antelope Valley Courthouse today.

"Deputies arrived at the home in the 1000 block of East Avenue Q 12 at 12:39 a.m. Thursday.

"Jackie Mendez, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene, Hecht said. Juarez Meza was taken to a hospital to be treated for stab wounds.

"Juarez Meza was booked at the Twin Towers Jail, with $100,000 bail."
