Bodies Found In Police Station Parking Lot

"GASTONIA, NC — Gastonia police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide in the parking lot of the police department Sunday morning.

"At 2:51 a.m., an officer noticed the brake lights on a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe sport utility vehicle parked outside the police department, police said. He found two people dead inside from gunshot wounds, according to a police department news release.

"Police said it appeared that the driver, Randall Newman, 45, shot and killed his wife, Laura Newman, 47, and then committed suicide.

"Randall Newman was employed by Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement. Laura Newman was coach of the varsity cheerleaders at Ashbrook High School in Gastonia."
