Two Dead In Luxury Retirement Home

"SPRING, TX — A couple in their late 80s died Wednesday afternoon in an apparent murder-suicide in Spring, the second such incident in the area within a month, officers said.

"The couple lived at the Conservatory at Champion Forest, an independent-living complex in the 8200 block of Cypresswood Drive near Champion Forest.

"The shootings happened around 2:30 p.m. when `the husband took his wife's life then took his own,` Harris County Constable Precinct 4 Chief Jim Sumner said. `She was found in one room and he was found in another.`

"The man left a note, but authorities have not released its contents or the names of the deceased. It is unclear whether the couple suffered from life-threatening illnesses.

"Detectives are at the scene and are continuing to investigate.

"Jan Kaiser, the executive director of the three-year-old community, called the shootings isolated and unfortunate.

"`It is a very tragic and bad event that happened,` she said. `I thank the authorities for their quick response for getting here and providing privacy for the community and the family.`

"She added that she had no concerns about the safety of residents or Conservatory employees. About 90 people live in the complex, which has 190 apartments.

"`It was an isolated incident,` Kaiser said. `Our residents were never in danger and no one on our staff was in danger.`"
