Two Dead In "Great Neighborhood"

"CHICAGO, IL — A man and a woman have died after being shot on the street in the Edgewater neighborhood in an apparent homicide-suicide, police said.

"The shooting occurred about 3:20 p.m at the intersection of North Sheridan Road and West Granville Avenue on the Far North Side, police said. The victims were taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, according to a Fire Department spokesman.

"They later were declared dead at St. Francis, according to police, but this could not be confirmed with the Fire Department or the Cook County medical examiner's office.

"The shooting took place just west of Sheridan Road on Granville Avenue, near the entrance to a parking lot between Sheridan and Kenmore Avenue, witnesses said.

"As the victim and the shooter walked side-by-side toward the lake, the gunman opened fire, firing three shots, then at least five more while the victim was down, a female witness said.

"The gunman then looked around, with gun in hand, as if looking for others, she said. He then sat on the curb before shooting himself in the head.

"The gunman never yelled or screamed before or after firing the shots.

"Two children walking nearby took cover in a nearby building, the witness said.

"`Regular T-shirts, jeans and sneakers. I thought it was two men,` she said.

"The witness said she was later told by police it was a husband and wife. But police detectives would not confirm their relationship to reporters.

"`This is a great neighborhood. You can walk to the store at night without worrying about anything,` she said.

"Another witness said he heard three shots and went to the window to see a man standing over another person who was already on the ground.

"The man with the gun shot the victim several more times, then turned the gun on himself, shot himself in the head, and collapsed to the ground, the witness said."
