Five Shots Put Woman In Critical Condition
"BINGHAMTON, NY — Police are wrapping up an investigation into a shooting that left one man dead and a woman in critical condition.
"Binghamton police responded to a report of gunfire at 13 Felters Road just before 9 Friday night.
"Chief Joe Zikuski tells Action News in a press conference Saturday that Kimberly Carpenter was visiting a friend at Saratoga Heights Apartments.
"He says her husband, 45-year-old Ted Carpenter, drove to the apartment complex and shot her five times while she sat in a parked car outside building 15.
"The husband fled the scene, but two State Troopers caught up with his car, a white Nissan Maxima, pulling him over at the intersection of Conklin Kirkwood Road and Colesville Road.
"Troopers say they approached the car and found Carpenter had shot himself.
"The coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.
"There is a history of domestic violence between the couple.
"`I don't think she anticipated being shot. He called before going to the Saratoga Apartments and asked if it was ok to come over. He was told yes, so obviously she wasn't expecting something like this,` said Chief Joe Zikuski.
"Kimberly Carpenter is now listed in critical condition at Wilson Trauma Center."
