Man Hospitalized After Botched Murder/Sucide

"MCALLEN, TX — Sheriff’s deputies said they would arrest a man hospitalized with a self-inflicted stab wound after he allegedly tried to shoot his wife.

"Emergency responders rushed Jorge Miranda, 54, to McAllen Medical Center after he stabbed himself in the abdomen with a 7-inch kitchen knife Saturday afternoon at his apartment on Juan Street, northwest of Edinburg.

"The attempted suicide came after the man allegedly fired one shot at his wife during an argument about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

"Investigators said the 9 mm handgun jammed before he could fire any more shots at his wife, Maria de Jesus Miranda.

"The wife told investigators she was getting dressed in the bathroom when Jorge barged in and said he was going to kill himself and take her with him, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said in a statement.

"Maria, 45, managed to duck when her husband fired at her, investigators said. Their 26-year-old son, Jose Miranda, was home at the time and wrested the gun away from his father after he heard the commotion in the bathroom.

"`The couple (has) some very deep-rooted personal issues,` Treviño said in a statement. `Mr. Miranda’s medical conditions exacerbated their tumultuous relationship, which led up to the shooting.`

"The sheriff declined to elaborate on Miranda’s ongoing medical condition, saying only that he was receiving treatment for it. Jorge Miranda is expected to recover from the stab wound.

"Deputies arrested the man Monday afternoon on a charge of attempted murder. An Hidalgo County justice of the peace was expected to arraign him at the hospital."
